Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, widely known as M R Hasan, is a distinguished Bangladeshi documentary photographer, filmmaker, poet, author and visual artist whose work delves deep into pressing global issues such as human rights, social justice, and environmental challenges. Born on September 29, 1977, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Hasan’s journey into the world of visual storytelling began with a foundation in film and video production at the University of Sydney. His passion for capturing the human condition led him to further studies at esteemed institutions, including the International Center of Photography in New York, the University of Oxford, Falmouth University, and Ateneo de Manila University.
Hasan’s compelling imagery has garnered international acclaim, earning him numerous prestigious awards such as the Lucie Award, One World Media Award, Human Rights Press Award, Allard Photography Prize, and the Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3). His poignant photo series, “The Looted Honor,” which sheds light on the plight of Rohingya rape survivors, received significant recognition, including the 23rd Human Rights Press Award.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Hasan is deeply committed to education and mentorship. He serves as a faculty member at Counter Foto, a photography and visual arts institution in Bangladesh, nurturing the next generation of visual storytellers. His works have been exhibited globally, from Photo Basel in Switzerland to the Belgrade Photo Month Festival in Serbia, reflecting his dedication to bringing untold stories to the forefront of public consciousness.
